Our solution relates to multiple design areas, namely: energy, waste (specifically fish waste), water and food. Our design solution involves the implementation of a biogas plant and a seawater greenhouse, with the former generating energy (utilizing fish waste and animal manure) and the latter converting seawater to freshwater, improving agriculture, while also producing gourmet salt as a means for an income. We believe our design is suited for the design challenge area, due to a number of reasons: Artisanal fishing is the predominant employment industry in Lobitos and Piedritas. Consequently, fish waste is abundant in the area. Therefore, a biogas plant which converts this waste to energy for use by the community, is ideal. As a byproduct of the biogas process, digestate is produced. Typically, digestate is used as fertilizer in farming. However, farming is not possible due to the brackish soil in the coastal areas. To address this need for agriculture, a greenhouse (specifically suited to coastal areas) constitutes the second part of our design. The fertilizer/digestate produced in the biogas plant is then utilized in the greenhouse. The greenhouse then facilitates for growth of the agricultural industry of the region. However, another benefit of the greenhouse is the production of sea-salt as a byproduct. The sea-salt can then be sold to tourists to improve the tourism industry in the region. Alternatively, the gourmet salts can be exported as a means of income for the region. Additional points to keep in mind regarding our design: - The biogas plant and greenhouse will be implemented on a large scale, with a single biogas plant and greenhouse addressing the needs of the entire population of Lobitos and Piedritas. - The energy produced from the biogas plant might not necessarily be sufficient in addressing the population's energy consumption in its entirety. Instead, the energy produced from the biogas plant will solely be used to prevent the weekly outages that the community experiences, or, to address the need for powering the 5% of population of Lobitos and 10% of Piedritas which do not have reliable electricity. Please see our power-point attached below for more information. Thank you! 😊 #Engineering4people #Team032 #NorthWestUniversity #NWU
